Here the satirist makes George Whitefield, the evangelical preacher, the target. The title's nickname, "Dr. Squintum," points to the squint that caricaturists often exaggerated in his face, and the demons around him suggest that his fervent preaching is presented as diabolical. By 1763 Whitefield had preached widely in England, Scotland, and the American colonies, drawing large outdoor crowds, and his emotional style won devoted followers and bitter critics alike. Prints like this one show how London satirists mocked the Methodist revival as religious enthusiasm.
