I Am Coming" promises the arrival of William F. Cody, "Buffalo Bill," whose name the poster pairs with a bison, an animal that by 1900 had been hunted to a small fraction of its former numbers. Cody, a former army scout and buffalo hunter, had built his Wild West show into a traveling spectacle that toured American cities and Europe, mixing riding, shooting and staged frontier scenes. The Courier Litho. Company of Buffalo, New York, produced bold multicolor posters like this one for touring shows, and the bison here recalls both the plains Cody had known and the herds that were vanishing as the show performed.
