This glass negative records a street scene on Grand Street, one of the east-west thoroughfares that cut across lower Manhattan. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, and the record gives no date, so the exact day is unknown. The Bain News Service, run by photographer George Grantham Bain, supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of city life in the early twentieth century. Grand Street ran through crowded immigrant neighborhoods where shops, pushcarts, and foot traffic filled the sidewalks, so this picture is best viewed as a document of everyday street life of that period.
