Rather than showing a finished building, this print records a plan for the work itself: a scaffold meant to wrap the peristyle, the colonnade that rings the base of a dome. The caption card is unverified, but the title and the 1852 to 1860 date range point toward the U.S. Capitol, where Thomas U. Walter's new iron dome was going up during the 1850s. Builders needed temporary framing like this to reach the upper columns while stone and iron were set in place. Working designs of this kind show how the construction was planned as much as how the finished building would look.
