Few catches from the Florida coast drew more attention in the early twentieth century than the tarpon, a large silver fish that anglers prized for its fight and size. Here the subject is Capt. Charlie Thompson, a fishing guide, posed beside two large tarpon taken near Miami. Miami grew quickly as a winter resort and sport-fishing destination after the railroad arrived in 1896, and photographs like this one documented guides and their catches for visitors and the local trade. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year remains unknown, but the scene reflects the hunting-and-fishing culture that drew wealthy tourists south.
