The frame in this photograph was built to hold a skylight over the areas, or light wells, of the Post Office extension. The caption card dates the picture to somewhere between about 1852 and 1860, a period when the federal Post Office Department's Washington building was being enlarged to house a growing mail operation. Skylights like this one brought daylight into interior rooms that would otherwise have been dark, so the view shows how builders solved a practical problem of light. The date and details come from an unverified caption card, so treat them as provisional.
