A carved mirror frame from the Italian court anchors this engraving, which shows the ornamental woodwork that Italian makers sent to the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. The engraving was reproduced in *Masterpieces of the Centennial International Exhibition*, a multivolume publication that offered American readers illustrated records of the fair's finest objects. Such pieces were meant to showcase craftsmanship to a broad public, and mirror frames of this kind drew attention to the decorative arts that national courts presented alongside manufactures and machinery. The record does not give a date for the engraving itself.
