A catalog-style view of boilers built for heating and ventilating places this picture in the years when American builders were turning to central heat in large buildings. Before the 1860s, most homes and many public buildings relied on wood or coal stoves and open fireplaces, so a boiler set up to distribute steam or hot water through pipes and ducts marked a newer approach.
