Few Roman emperors carry a name as long as Publius Licinius Valerianus Egnatius Gallienus, shown here in an engraving by P. Dujardin whose date is not recorded. Gallienus shared power with his father Valerian from 253 until Valerian was captured by the Persian king Shapur I around 260, leaving the son to face usurpers, breakaway regions, and invasions on several frontiers. He is also remembered for expanding the mobile cavalry and for his support of learning and the arts, and he was killed near Milan in 268.
