Unlike many prints of Washington's career, this one turns to his last hours at Mount Vernon, where he died on December 14, 1799, after a brief illness that began with a sore throat. Nathaniel Currier issued the hand-colored lithograph in New York in 1846, when his firm was producing steady streams of patriotic scenes for a middle-class market. The composition imagines a household gathered around a deathbed, which let viewers mourn the first president in a familiar, domestic setting.
