Alexander H. Rice, the Boston mayor, appears here as a wood engraving published in Ballou's Pictorial in January 1856, the year he took office. Ballou's was a Boston weekly that paired news with engraved portraits and views, so a likeness like this one shows how a local civic leader was presented to readers at the time. Rice later served as Governor of Massachusetts, and this early engraving records him at the start of his public career. The caption card's subject tags also point to Boston Harbor, though the record does not say how that setting connects to the portrait.
