Temple Place is a short downtown street in Boston, and this view from around 1912 shows it as a quiet, tree-lined block rather than the busy commercial thoroughfare it would later become. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold photographs of American cities, landscapes and street scenes to tourists and publishers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negative is now held in the Library of Congress collection. Because the record notes that its caption data is unverified, the exact details of the scene are best read as a general snapshot of Boston streetlife in the 1910s, when horse-drawn traffic and streetcars still shared the city's roads with the first motor vehicles.
