Moored at sea rather than built on land, this lightship marked the approaches to Boston for vessels coming in from the Atlantic. Lightships like it stood in for lighthouses where the water was too deep or the bottom too shifting for a masonry tower, and their crews lived aboard for long stretches while tending a lamp and fog signal. The Detroit Publishing Co., which issued a large catalog of American views in the early twentieth century, copyrighted this c1906 photograph, and it records a working piece of the harbor's navigation at a time when steam and sail still shared these waters.
