Boston Light, the oldest lighthouse in the United States, stands on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor, and this view pairs it with the Hotel Pemberton at Hull, the resort peninsula that drew summer visitors seeking sea air across the harbor mouth. The Detroit Photographic Company, known for its many scenic views of American places around 1900, issued the print under its copyright. The caption data comes from an unverified card, so the date is approximate, but the pairing of a working light with a seaside hotel shows how the harbor's shore towns mixed navigation and leisure at the turn of the century.
