Lockport sits on the Niagara Escarpment, and its upper village is the part of town that grew up around the locks and the hard limestone ledge where the Erie Canal drops through a flight of locks cut into the rock. This view shows that higher ground in Niagara County, New York, and the record credits the printmaker J.H. Bufford, a Boston lithographer known for city and town views in the nineteenth century. The record gives no date, so the print's exact age is uncertain, but it likely reflects the canal era, when Lockport was a busy stop between Buffalo and Albany.
