Among the early views of Egypt, this plate stands out for turning a daguerreotype into an engraved image: it reproduces the Great Pyramid of Giza as Noël-Marie-Paymal Lerebours recorded it, then translated it into etching and aquatint with hand-applied color. The plate appeared as plate 8 in *Excursions Daguerriennes*, published in Paris in 1842, one of the first books to present daguerreotype views to a broad public. Because the printed version relied on engraving rather than a direct photographic print, its fine tonal detail reflects the engraver's hand as much as the camera's.
