Two standard bearers stand amid the aftermath of a fight, the detail that sets this sheet-music cover apart from the many triumphant flag scenes of the period. The drawing is credited to E.B. Bensell and was reproduced as a color lithograph by T. Sinclair in Philadelphia, a city with a busy trade in printed music during the Civil War. Publishers used such covers to attract buyers to patriotic songs, and this one turns from victory to the cost of battle, with the flags as the surviving emblems of the men who fell.
