Few theaters of the period shared a block with a hotel the way the Sam S. Shubert theater did, and this 1923 ink drawing shows the two buildings on College Street near Chapel Street in New Haven, Connecticut. New Haven was a common tryout city for Broadway productions, and the Shubert brothers' house drew touring companies that hoped to refine a show before its New York opening. The drawing comes from the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering holdings, which preserve plans like this one for studying how entertainment buildings were laid out in the 1920s.
