Chapel Street, across from Yale College in New Haven, was one of the city's busiest entertainment strips in 1923, and the Hyperion theater stood there as a newer addition to it. This ink drawing belongs to a set of architectural and engineering drawings, so it records the building as a set of planned lines and proportions rather than as a street scene. Its date places it in the decade when movie houses were spreading through American cities and when theaters were often designed to draw students and townspeople alike. Viewers interested in the period can use the drawing to see how a 1920s theater was laid out on paper before construction.
