This drawing shows the wrecked locomotives on the railroad bridge over the Chickahominy River in Virginia, a scene dated to June 1862. That month the Union Army was fighting its way up the Virginia Peninsula toward Richmond, and the Chickahominy, a slow, marshy stream east of the Confederate capital, was a major obstacle that both sides crossed and contested. Armies on both sides routinely destroyed rail bridges and engines to deny them to the enemy, which is the event the subject headings describe. The sketch was made in pencil, white gouache, and ink wash on brown paper, a quick, field-style technique that conveys the damage and the mood of the moment.
