The photograph records the opening of a Woolworth store in Watertown, a city in northern New York, with the F.W. Woolworth Company's name marking a new outpost of its growing chain. Frank W. Woolworth opened his first successful five-and-ten-cent store in Utica in 1879, and by the late 1920s his company operated well over a thousand stores across the country. The image comes from the New York World-Telegram and Sun newspaper collection, so it was made for news use and captures a local business at a moment of national expansion. It is worth looking at how a small city's main street took on a store that followed the same format found in larger cities.
