Few pictures in the Bain collection show a gathering of itinerant men as directly as this one from Cincinnati, whose title, *The Big Hand-Out*, points to the handouts that drifting workers often sought. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, sold images of current events to newspapers, and its glass negatives document a period when rail-riding laborers were a familiar sight in American cities. The date is not recorded, and the title comes from information the agency wrote on the negative or its caption card, so it should be read as provisional. The scene still offers a useful view of the migration and labor patterns that shaped urban life at the time.
