Few portraits of Joseph Eggleston Johnston give his full name as plainly as this Philadelphia engraving, whose title line and subject heading both record his military service. A West Point graduate who had served in the Mexican War, Johnston commanded the Army of Northern Virginia until he was wounded at Seven Pines in 1862, and he later led the Army of Tennessee. The print is credited to William Sartain, a Philadelphia engraver, and its undated imprint places it sometime between 1860 and 1890, when engraved likenesses of Civil War commanders were widely sold.
