This engraved likeness of James Longstreet, mounted on a carte de visite card, carries the imprint of Elias Dexter's Broadway shop in New York. Longstreet was a Confederate lieutenant general who commanded a corps at Gettysburg in July 1863, and after the war some Southern writers blamed him for the army's defeat there, a dispute that played out in print for decades. The card is undated, but the publisher's address and the period of the record place it between 1860 and 1890. Small cards like this were popular collectibles in those years, and they show how public figures of the war were packaged for a civilian audience.
