The poster's own text names the recruiter: "Schützt eure Heimat! Tretet bei dem Freikorps Hülsen / Gipkens" calls on Germans to "protect your homeland" and join the Freikorps Hülsen and Gipkens. Dated 1918, it appeared as Germany was collapsing at the end of the First World War, when the army was demobilizing and the country faced revolutionary unrest and threatened borders. The Freikorps were volunteer paramilitary units that formed in that gap, often led by former officers and recruiting men who had no regular army to return to. Posters like this one show how these groups presented armed service as patriotic duty, a message that outlasted the war and fed into the violence of the early Weimar Republic.
