Theodore Roosevelt is shown taking the oath of office on March 4, 1905, the day he was sworn in for his first full term after assuming the presidency following William McKinley's assassination in September 1901. The record names Chief Justice Melville Weston Fuller, who administered the oath, placing the moment in the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Roosevelt had won the 1904 election by a wide margin, and the ceremony marked the start of a term in which he pursued trust-busting, conservation of public lands, and the building of the Panama Canal. Photographs of inaugurations from this period are valuable because they record the formal ritual of the office at a time when still cameras were only beginning to capture such events in detail.
