Theodore Roosevelt's second inauguration, held on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol on March 4, 1905, is the event this print records, and the caption card places it at the Capitol itself. Roosevelt had succeeded to the presidency after William McKinley's assassination in 1901 and was elected in his own right in 1904. The photograph was made by G.V. Bock, a Washington, D.C., studio photographer whose copyrighted views captured many of the city's ceremonies and public occasions. Because the record rests on an old caption card, some details, including the exact date of the image, remain unverified.
