Des Moines sits where the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers meet, and this 1868 panorama shows the town from a high, angled viewpoint that lets the viewer take in its streets and blocks at once. Albert Ruger, drawing for the Merchant's Lithographing Company, produced many city views of this kind in the 1860s and 1870s, with individual buildings rendered in fine detail. Iowa had made Des Moines its seat of government in 1857, and by 1868 the town was a growing capital and railroad hub. The map is a useful record of the town's layout and built environment at that time.
