Albia, the county seat of Monroe County in south-central Iowa, drew its livelihood in 1917 from coal, farming, and the railroads that hauled both out of the region. Coal mines in the surrounding countryside employed many local men, and the town's stores and banks depended as much on miners' households as on the farms around them. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and Albia took part in Liberty Loan drives, wartime food conservation, and farewells for local men called to service. The courthouse square and the business blocks around it formed the center of civic life, where farm families came in on market days and residents gathered to hear the latest news from Europe.
