Its title sets it apart from many recruiting posters of the period: it urges men to volunteer before conscription could take the choice away. The United States entered the war in April 1917, and the Selective Service Act that May created a national draft, with registration held that June. This poster, No. 3 in a series issued by the Associated Motion Picture Advertisers, was one of many efforts to fill the ranks through appeals to patriotism rather than compulsion. Uncle Sam, the national personification shown here, was a familiar figure in wartime recruiting art of the era.
