Among the gallery's New York views, this one stands out for its subjects: African American children and a recreation facility, a scene more often overlooked than the skyline or the street crowds. The caption card gives only the title "New York, New York" and a summer 1938 date, and the original negative is missing, so the surviving record is a transfer made for the Office of War Information's Overseas Picture Division in 1944. The picture belongs to the Farm Security Administration and OWI collection, which documented American life during the Depression and the years that followed, when city playgrounds and public recreation programs were a common focus for social reformers and photographers alike.
