The Supreme Court chamber shown here is one of the few interior views of the Court's working space in Washington, D.C., captured in the early 1920s, when the justices had only recently moved into their own building. The Court had met in the old Senate Chamber in the Capitol for most of the nineteenth century, and the marble chamber pictured here reflects the building that opened in 1935 only after the years of planning that followed the Court's move. This is a copy negative from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial firm that photographed the capital extensively, so its glass plate records how the room looked to a working photographer of its day.
