Darby, the trotter pictured here, is identified in the title as a son of Delmonico, and the print celebrates him as champion of the 1879 Grand Circuit, the series of harness-racing meets that drew the country's fastest trotting horses to tracks in the Northeast and Midwest. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued colored lithographs of horses, trains, sporting scenes and everyday American life, produced many such portraits of famous trotters for a public that followed harness racing closely. Prints like this one were often sold to owners, breeders and fans, so they mix a record of a racehorse's achievements with the admiration of a horse-loving audience.
