Osceola, the Seminole leader, is shown here in a lithograph drawn on stone by George Catlin from his own original portrait, a detail that ties the print directly to the painter who knew his subject in person. Osceola led Seminole resistance during the Second Seminole War in Florida, which began in 1835 when the federal government pressed the tribe to leave for lands west of the Mississippi. He was captured under a flag of truce in 1837 and died in captivity at Fort Moultrie in South Carolina in January 1838, the same year this print was issued in New York. Its wide circulation helped make his face familiar to a public following the war.
