Two queens wait on the steps of a cathedral for Brunhild in this still from *Siegfried*, the 1924 film that opened Fritz Lang's two-part *Die Nibelungen*. Produced in Berlin by Decla-Bioscop, the film adapts the medieval German epic the *Nibelungenlied*, whose story of royal rivalry and betrayal plays out at the court in Worms. The picture's cataloging under religion, churches, and mythology reflects how the film pairs a sacred architectural setting with legend. Its stylized sets and large-scale staging made it one of the most ambitious German silent films of its era.
