The picture shows Kriemhild and Brunhild on cathedral steps, a still from *Siegfried*, the 1924 film that opened Fritz Lang's two-part epic *Die Nibelungen*. Decla-Bioscop produced the film in Berlin, and its story draws on the medieval German poem the *Nibelungenlied*, which is set among the Burgundian court in the early medieval period. Lang's film was a major effort of the German silent era, and its stylized sets and costumes made the legend's courtly and religious world visible on screen. The church setting also reflects the film's interest in ritual and power.
