Four figures from the great portal at Reims, on the west front where French kings were crowned, are the subject here. The sculpture on that facade is among the finest Gothic carving in France, and many of its statues were badly damaged when the city was shelled during the First World War. Photographs made around that time are valued for recording the figures as they stood before or during such losses. The caption card gives no date, so the exact moment the picture was taken remains uncertain.
