Rainbows arching through the spray set this sheet apart from the broader views of the falls on this board. Joseph Pennell made it in 1910 as part of his Niagara Falls series, drawing on lithography, a medium he worked in extensively in the years before the First World War. The edition was limited to 25 impressions, and the artist signed and dated the image on the stone, so each impression came from the same drawn original. Pennell's Niagara work often emphasizes the mist and constant motion of the cataract, and the rainbows give that effect a clear focal point.
