Few things say "rural New England" like an orchard, and this poster puts that image at the center of its title, *Old Orchard*, a play of New England life. Posters like this one advertised touring theatrical productions, which in the late 1800s and early 1900s carried regional dramas of farm and village life to small-town opera houses across the country. Its appeal lay in the nostalgia of the subject: the gnarled apple trees and the family land stood for a settled past that audiences were already beginning to feel was slipping away.
