Few posters from the Works Progress Administration's art program announce a regional show as plainly as this one, which promotes Federal Art in New England. The Federal Art Project, part of the WPA from 1935 until it was closed in 1943, employed artists to paint murals, make prints, and design posters for public spaces. Its poster division relied heavily on silkscreen, which produced flat, bold areas of color that were inexpensive to print in quantity and easy to read from across a street. Posters like this one show how the program used graphic design to bring art to ordinary audiences during the Depression.
