The Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, followed the failure of the South Fork Dam, which had been built to hold back a reservoir above the Conemaugh River valley and the steel-mill city of Johnstown. After days of heavy rain, the dam gave way and released a torrent that tore through the valley and swept into the city, killing more than 2,000 people. Pictures from the aftermath, such as this one, record the wreckage of debris piled against bridges and buildings, a scene that drew national attention and helped shape later debate over dam safety.
