Chelsea, Massachusetts, was in 1908 a dense industrial city on the Mystic River shore just north of Boston, where factories, wharves, and rail lines crowded close to tightly packed wooden tenements. In April of that year a fire swept through the city, and high winds carried flames across blocks of frame houses and commercial buildings, leaving much of the built-up center in ruins. Thousands of residents lost their homes, and the disaster forced families into temporary shelters while rebuilding began. The panorama records the scale of that destruction, which local people would long remember as the great fire that reshaped their city.
