Hemingway had made Cuba his home for years by 1954, living at Finca Vigía, his estate outside Havana, and this print records the Cuban government honoring him that summer. The timing was significant. *The Old Man and the Sea*, set on the Cuban coast, had appeared in 1952 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953, and Hemingway's standing in both countries was at its height. The ceremony shows how closely his public life had become tied to the island he wrote about.
