Published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1898, this lithograph celebrates American naval success during the Spanish-American War. Its title points to the summer campaign off Cuba, when the U.S. Navy destroyed Admiral Pascual Cervera's Spanish squadron at Santiago de Cuba on July 3. The firm, long known for popular scenes of American life, was by then turning out cheap patriotic prints to meet public appetite for war news. The plural "fleets" reflects how much of the conflict was decided at sea, where naval power counted for as much as the land battles. Prints like this one reached ordinary households quickly and show how the war was packaged for a mass audience.
