Few monuments in the capital carry a history as specific as this urn in the Potomac Park Rose Garden, a gift from Cuba honoring the sailors lost when the battleship Maine exploded in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. The blast killed 266 American crew members and helped push the United States into war with Spain that spring. An urn honoring those dead stands in Washington rather than Havana, a gesture from a newly independent Cuba to the nation whose intervention had helped end Spanish rule. The photograph, taken sometime between 1928 and 1960, shows how the memorial had settled into the everyday life of the park.
