James Van DerZee made this portrait of a dancer in Harlem in 1925, a period when the neighborhood was at the height of the Harlem Renaissance and its nightlife, theaters and ballrooms drew performers from across the city. Van DerZee ran a studio on 135th Street and became known for carefully posed studio portraits of Harlem residents, many of them in elegant clothing against painted or draped backdrops. This print is a gelatin silver photograph from a later edition: it was issued around 1974 in an eighteen-photograph portfolio, numbered 2 of 75, and signed in pencil on the mount.
