Few recruiting posters promise travel as directly as this one, which asks, "Travel? Adventure?" and answers with a Marine in the foreground and leopards in the scene. James Montgomery Flagg, the illustrator best known for his "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster, made it in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. The Marine Corps needed to expand quickly, and posters like this one tried to appeal to young men looking for excitement and a way out of ordinary work. The pitch to see the world, rather than the grim realities of the trenches, is worth noting.
