Flagg, the illustrator best known for the Uncle Sam "I Want You" recruiting poster, made this color poster for the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, the agency that organized American merchant shipbuilding during the First World War. German submarine attacks had sunk heavy tonnage of Allied shipping, and after the United States entered the war in 1917, the country needed a large new merchant fleet to carry troops and supplies to Europe. The poster's slogan asks American workers to see their shipyard labor as a shared war effort, a message aimed at a home front whose output mattered as much as the fighting overseas. Posters like this one show how the government used commercial art to recruit labor and build public support for industrial mobilization.
