This print shows the DeWitt Clinton, a locomotive identified in its catalog record as No. 2122. The engine is named for the New York governor who championed the Erie Canal, and the original locomotive of that name went into service in 1831 on the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad between Albany and Schenectady, one of the earliest steam passenger lines in the United States. The record's date is given only as "[18--]," and its caption information is unverified, so the photograph's exact year is uncertain. Still, the image is a useful look at the design of early American steam power, with its tall smokestack, exposed boiler, and open passenger cars.
