Set beside a modern oil-burning mountain-type engine, the William Crooks was built in 1861 and first ran in 1862 on the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, a predecessor of the Great Northern. The pairing makes the point: two locomotives separated by about six decades of development, with an ox and cart on the tracks in the foreground. The print is dated to the 1920s and may have been used in Great Northern publicity for its New Oriental Limited passenger train.
